About the Item

This is an oil painting made by Sixto Febus (1918-2010). He was a Puertorican painter who was very known in Europe as an art restorer. He worked in the royal collection of Buckingham Palace, the Louvre Museum, and the Prado Museum. He was also known for his portraits of kings and presidents. He painted president John F. Kennedy and his wife Jackie. This painting illustrates a view of the Old San Juan historic fortress- San Felipe del Morro and in the back of it, the Governor’s Mansion of Puerto Rico also known as La Fortaleza. The fortress was initially built in the 16th century and finished in the 18th century to guard the San Juan Harbor and defend the Spanish colonial island from seaborne enemies. There are some green trees and palms trees surrounding the Mansion. Some garitas or sentry boxes are prominent at the walls of the fortress. The Caribbean Sea embellishes this coastline’s scenery where you can also appreciate the rocky sandy beach. The painting was signed by Sixto Febus in the left lower side. The gilt frame is adorned with some scrolls.
