About the Item

Sophie Wencke “Path to the Devil's Moor” Painting, oil on panel, created around 1900, signed lower left elaborately framed with an antique “Berlin molding” Size 75 x 96 cm Sophie Wencke studied art painting in Dresden from 1891 to 1893 and in Berlin from 1893 to 1897 with painters such as the animal painter Hermann Pansee, the landscape painter Berta Schrader and in Berlin with the landscape painter Max Uth. In 1898 she took part in the launching of the passenger steamer Assyria in Bremerhaven. In the same year, she created one of her most famous paintings, which is now in the collection of the Bremerhaven Historical Museum (Morgenstern Museum). From 1916, the two sisters lived in the porcelain town of Selb and created designs for the Hutschenreuther porcelain factory. After the First World War (1919), she married the Hamburg postmaster Dr. Wilhelm Meinken, now calling herself Wencke-Meinken, and lived in Hamburg-Bergedorf, but kept her studio in Worpswede. From 1933 she lived in Worpswede again and created watercolors and then oil paintings for a Weser cycle. She completed a commission for the town of Remscheid. During the Third Reich, she painted cityscapes of Essen. In 1941 and 1942, she was represented with two paintings at the Great German Art Exhibition[1] in Munich, which was representative of the art desired by the state under National Socialism and was propagated as the most important cultural event in National Socialist Germany. Her oil painting “Evening Clouds” was shown in 1941[2] and an inked chalk drawing entitled “Worpswede Landscape” in 1942[3]. Study trips took Wencke to Italy, Scotland and through the Sauerland region, among other places. She kept in touch with her hometown of Bremerhaven and the shipowners and shipyards and found artistic inspiration.
