Standing Portrait of the French President Felix Faure

About the Item

Portrait of Felix Faure, president of France by Henri Rondel. The painting is signed and dated and was presented at the Salon of 1897. Henri Rondel was born in February 1857 in Avignon. He was the student of Jérôme, participated in the salon of French Artists where he received an honorary mention in 1898. He was granted the highest French honorary award, the Légion d’Honneur, for his work and a bronze medal at the World’s Fair of 1900. He died in Paris on May 25th 1919. Some of Rondel’s work is in the museums of Bordeaux and Avignon. This work is one of his rare 'socialite' portraits and large dimension paintings. He did a portrait of 'Madame G. in the Chateau de la Motte', but none of his paintings are known to be of this size. Dimensions: With frame: Height: 9 feet 4 inches 1/4; width : 5 feet 11 inches. Without: Height: 7 feet 11 inches 3/4; width : 4 feet 6 inches 1/4. Felix Faure was born in Paris in 1841. President of the Republic of France from 1895 to 1899, nicknamed: “The Sun-President”. Consul to Greece in the town of le Havre, vice-mayor and president of the Regatta Society of the town. He was elected deputy in 1881, and was vice-secretary of Commerce and of the Colonies in different cabinets until he was elected president in January 1895. He contributed to the strengthening of the Franco-Russian alliance by welcoming Nicolas the Third tsar of Russia in Paris. Félix Faure died in the arms of his mistress in a living room in the Elysée presidential palace in 1899.
