Theodor von der Beek (born March 21, 1838 in Kaiserswerth , died March 15, 1921 in Dusseldorf, Germany )
German portrait and genre painter of the Dusseldorf school .
Initially employed in the business of his father, a brewer, von der Beek entered the elementary class of Andreas Müller at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 1856. In 1859 he moved to the painting class of Carl Ferdinand Sohn and was in the master class of Eduard Bendemann from 1862 to 1866 . In addition to portraits, including numerous self-portraits, he created many-figure compositions in the countryside or in rural milieus and interiors, the works of Ludwig Knaus , Benjamin Vautier d.Ä. or Carl Hübner recall, u. a. The Bridal Shoes (1872, 1874), A pawn game (1880) orPanic horror (1885). Travels took him to southern Germany and Spain in the 1890s, inspiring him to new pictorial themes, including: a. The Royal Tobacco Factory in Seville or Arabian Dance . He participated in many exhibitions, also outside of Dusseldorf, such as in Berlin (Academic Art Exhibitions 1881, 1883, 1884, 1892, Jubilee Exhibition 1886, International Art Exhibition 1896), Dresden (1883), Glasgow (1887), London (1877, 1896 , 1898), Munich (1879, 1883), Hamburg (1887), Salzburg (1886) and Vienna (1888). His most successful pictorial creations appeared as wood engraving reproductions in illustrated magazines, such as Panic Terror ( Daheim , 1882),Pilgrims at the ferry and a duet ( about land and sea , 1881 and 1887) or a pawn game ( The Garden Arbor , 1882). Von der Beek was a member of the artist association Malkasten
