About the Item
Oil on canvas showing a natural background landscape, barely sketched, to give prominence to the figures that are moving forward in the first term. The man, to the right, carries a cane on his shoulders and a series of elements, besides being accompanied by a baby bear. In the center, a woman walks with a stick on her shoulder, carrying a saddle loaded with more objects and children. The painting shows a family of gypsies or "travellers", on the way to some place with a show in which they would employ the baby bear. Between the 15th and 18th centuries the artistic image of the "travellers" is stereotyped and very scarce, with some engraving, tapestry and paintings such as the "Landscape with Gypsies" by David Teniers III of the Museo del Prado (inv. Poo1818). The 19th century would be the moment of emergence of the gypsy ("travellers") motif in the plastic arts, in the interest of foreign artists attracted by the "exotism" of these people, exposing what they considered their most folkloric features, highlighting works by Fortuny and Sorolla. The present work intends to influence the particularities of these people, but without remaining in their stereotypes, clearly showing the hardness of their life and the loneliness it brings with it. Technically, we can appreciate its relationship with novel contributions appeared in French painting since the late 19th century. Thematically, it recalls works of social realism (pictorial movement appeared in France towards the middle of the 19th century).
