About the Item
The American public was fascinated with all things exotic in the 1930s and 1940s, including aquatic and seaside themes and Art Deco hotels and residential interiors often featured paintings and sculptures evoking mermaids, starfish, seahorses and other undersea creatures. Here, Robert O. Bach, stationed at Bellows Field in Hawaii in 1942, captures an exotic fantasy world of coral, seashells, starfish, lobster and brightly-colored fish, all in a lovely world of green-blue water. Bach had studied at the California School of Fine Arts and exhibited at the Palace of the Legion of Honor. He exhibited this painting at the Honolulu Academy of Arts and the San Francisco Museum of Art, and later it was offered by Gump, the luxury department store in San Francisco. (Dimensions include matte and frame.)
