"Tropical Fish and Giant Clam, " Brilliant Art Deco Painting of Undersea Life

About the Item

Painted with a brilliant palette and very fine detail, this depiction of a tropical fish swimming above a strand of seaweed and a giant clam, surrounded by a cloud of bubbles, is a compelling example of Art Deco decorative painting. The range of blues, greens and silvers in the scales and fins of the fish are virtually iridescent, and the deep blues of the water and hints of red peeking out from inside the clam shell are all gorgeous. The painting comes from France, and the painter left his monogram in the lower-right corner, which seems to be CAL. The medium is gouache on cardboard.
