About the Item
Painted in white and blue in a way that captures the blindingly bright sunlight of North Africa, this painting by Julius Bloch depicts a veiled woman carrying an earthenware jug, framed by a townscape with stuccoed houses and the dome of a mosque. Bloch was fascinated by African American life earlier in his career, and painted many Black figures -- male and female -- that were widely exhibited. Later in his life he traveled to Greece and the Mediterranean, painting scenes such as this that were filled with bright color and vivid atmosphere. The medium is oil on Masonite; the frame is original. (Dimensions include frame.)
