About the Item

A wonderful, French oil painting on wood-board featuring a nautical scene from the town of Sables d'Olonne on the Atlantic coast. This original artwork is not only desirable for its artistic quality but also for its charming circular shape. This painting is signed by renowned French artist, Robert Laroche (1896-1974), in the lower left section (see photo). R. Laroche is well known for his nautical paintings in both oil and watercolor. He attended l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts between 1912 and 1914 and then worked in the studio of Raphäel Collin. He later moved to the Atlantic coast where he frequently painted nautical motifs from Concarneau, Douarnenez, Saint-Malo and Sable d'Olonne. It is from the somewhat torn, handwritten inscription on the back of this painting that we can clearly say that this motif is from Sables d'Olonne (see close-up photos). The painting is numbered (nb 4) on the back and could possibly have been part of a series of paintings. The painting is not dated. However, Robert Laroche painted most of his nautical scenes from the Atlantic cost during the late 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. This painting looks like one of his earlier pieces from this period - late 1930s/1940s. The painting is sold in what seems to be its original circular frame. The wood frame has a distressed gold finish and an inner border, also in wood, with a hand-painted garland (see photos). The painting is in fair vintage condition. It has not been cleaned, I leave that decision up to the new owner. It has a yellow stain on the left side (see photo). No missing paint. The frame shows signs of wear (chips and cracks) consistent with age but no instability. It seems like someone has poured some kind of glue on the top section of the back of the painting in order to stabilize the crack in the frame (see photos).
