Waldemar Sjölander Untitled Oil on Canvas Painting

About the Item

A rare oil on canvas painting by Swedish-born Mexican artist Waldemar Sjölander. The painting features a set of humanoid figures on a green background. Signed and dated 1981 on the top left. Waldemar Sjölander (1908 - 1988) was born in Gotemburg. His father was a safe locks inventor and engineer who took him with him to study arts all around Europe. He also worked as a merchant sailor and visited Mexico for the first time in the 1930's. An apprentice of Tor Bjurström, he was part of the Gothenburg Colourists, a prominent generation of Swedish painters. Despite having great success as a painter, he moved to Mexico in 1946 and got the nationality a year later. A pioneer of modern art languages in the then social realism - dominated Mexican art landscape, Sjölander excelled as an artist and teacher of the next generation of national painters and sculptors. His work was rescued from oblivion in an important individual exhibition at Museo Carrillo Gil held in 2019.
