St. John the Baptist announcing the coming of Christ
Oil on copper, 24 x 19 cm
Framed, 33 x 26 cm
The painting features in the foreground the magniloquent figure of St. John the Baptist, the prophet who announced the arrival of the Messiah and baptized him in the waters of the Jordan River. In the painting, John is recognizable by the reed he holds in his right hand that ends in a cross, a symbol of his mission and martyrdom, his camel-skin robe, and a red cloak that symbolizes his passion for the truth that will lead him to the ultimate gift of life. The Emilian painter responsible for the execution of the painting depicts a handsome young John with curly blond hair and a statuesque build. The saint turns his gaze directly toward the viewer, calling him to attention: he points with his left hand to a figure silhouetted in the distance, with draped robes in shades of pink and blue and a halo around his head. It is the long-awaited Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth, who at the very River Jordan chooses to begin his public mission. At the iconographic level, the painting has several interesting references to the pictorial experiences of the members of the Carracci family and the painters who took part in the experience of the Accademia degli incamminati, first and foremost Guido Reni.
The iconography seems to take its cue from Annibale Carracci's unusual St. John the Baptist Announcing the Coming of Christ, an oil on copper currently in the Metropolitan Museum in New York (inv. 2009.252) that has been part of various illustrious collections throughout its history, from the Farnese in Parma to that of the Prince of Orleans in Paris. Instead, the Baptist's magniloquent pose seems to look to the models and classicist import of the characters in Guido Reni's paintings, with particular reference to the Preaching of the Baptist already in Rome in the Vietti collection or the Saint John the Baptist in the Royal Palace in Naples.
