About the Item
Hedi Rothschild Kandel Israeli Artist (1912-2003)
Portrait of Young Man Wonderful expressionist portrait. Hedi Kandel (born Rothschild) studied art in Nurenberg and medicine in Erlangen before fleeing Germany for Paris in 1933. She studied fashion design in Paris and eventually, she settled in Israel in Kriyat, Tivon. By the time of this painting (before 1963), she was exhibiting successfully in the United States.
Based upon correspondence attached to the backing, this work was purchased by Mr. ***** on Fifth Avenue in NY by Mr. ***** of Detroit, Michigan and it is offered by Uncommon Artifacts Estate Services, LLC via his son’s estate.
Hedi Kandel was awarded a Gold Medal at the International Biennale of Vichy in 1966 and numerous other awards. A retrospective exhibition a number of years ago noted that her work appears unexpectedly neglected by collectors, a situation that appears to remain unchanged, but likely to eventually remedy itself due to the quality of the work!
Note: Although, pastel and mixed media work from her late career are occasionally available in the market oil paintings this early are seldom encountered.
