About the Item

Beautifully and sensitively painted, this WPA-period portrait of a young man in an unusual setting -- perhaps a boiler room or plumbing closet -- was executed by Dorothy Van Loan, a celebrated modernist who won many prizes and medals in the 1920s, 30s and 40s. The young man is beautifully dressed in a fashionable sports jacket, sweater vest and tie, and his hair is longish and swept back from his forehead, all expressed in rich colors -- oxblood, flannel grey and shades of brown. Van Loan exhibited widely, including at the Pennsylvania Academy of fine Arts in 1935, around the time this painting was finished, and at the Revsin Gallery. The painting is oil on canvas, and is signed in the lower lefthand corner; it was recently stretched and framed.
