About the Item

Highly collectible midcentury Fernand Léger Museum Morsbroich lithograph art poster to advertise an exhibition in West Germany, circa 1950s. The piece is from the French Posters Collection (printed in Paris by Mourlot) and is in very nice unframed condition with limited handling. Beautiful abstract image with vibrant and crisp colors and lettering. Free shipping in the continental United States. Léger was born in the Argentan, Orne, Basse-Normandie, where his father raised cattle. Fernand Léger initially trained as an architect from 1897-1899 before moving in 1900 to Paris, where he supported himself as an architectural draftsman. After military service in Versailles in 1902-1903, he enrolled at the School of Decorative Arts; he also applied to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts but was rejected. He nevertheless attended the Beaux-Arts as a non-enrolled student, spending what he described as “three empty and useless years” studying with Gérôme and others, while also studying at the Académie Julian.[1] He began to work seriously as a painter only at the age of 25. At this point his work showed the influence of Impressionism, as seen in Le Jardin de ma mère (My Mother’s Garden) of 1905, one of the few paintings from this period that he did not later destroy. A new emphasis on drawing and geometry appeared in Léger’s work after he saw the Cézanne retrospective at the Salon d’Automne in 1907 Posters as an art form were invented by Jules Chéret in Paris in the 1860’s. Their proliferation and refinement were the result of advances in printing technology, a relaxation of laws regulating the press, and a booming demand for the advertisement of ‘modern’ products and of the Parisian lifestyle in the Belle Epoque (1871 – 1914). In journals, books, theater programs, and posters, the graphic arts soon transcended their commercial function and became art objects sought out by art collectors worldwide.

Rare Linocut Poster "Vallavris Exhibition 1954" by Pablo Picasso
By Pablo Picasso
Located in San Diego, CA
Highly collectible and rare linocut poster "Vallavris Exhibition 1954" by Pablo Picasso, circa 1954.. The print is in good vintage and measures 24" x 30". It is presented in a simple black wood frame and is signed in the print. Super cool and hard to find Picasso poster! #2912 Starting in the 1950s, Picasso worked with the linocut printer Hidalgo Arnéra to produce posters for ceramic exhibitions and bullfights. The printer described their working method as such: “Picasso worked at night; in the morning, Marcel the chauffeur brought what he had completed to the print shop with notes added by Jacqueline Roque. I pulled the proofs and returned them to [his home] La Californie at exactly 1:30. This regular rhythm of working continued for eight years, every day, except Saturday and Sunday.” This idiosyncratic procedure speaks to the collaborative effort of these printmaking ventures, which included his partner, his printer, and his chauffeur Title: Vallauris Exhibition 1954 Artist: Pablo Picasso Printer: Printed by Hidalgo Arnéra Publisher: Published by Hidalgo Arnéra Date: 1954 Medium: Linoleum cut ABOUT THE ARTIST Born in 1881, Pablo Ruiz y Picasso followed in his father’s footsteps as an academically trained painter and studied art at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in his native Spain.
