18h Century, Four Italian Etching Allegory of the Four Seasons

About the Item

18h Century, Four Italian Etching Allegory of the Four Seasons Allegory of the Four Seasons, engraved by Giovanni Volpato and drawn by Francesco Maggiotto, second half of the 18th century Measures with frame: cm W 55 x H 40.5 x D 2.5. canvas cm W 50.5 x H 41.5 This Allegory of the Four Seasons, printed on paper then applied on canvas, was created by the famous engraver Giovanni Volpato on a project by Francesco Maggiotto. The engravings are presented inside neoclassical walnut wood frames with glass to protect the paper. The four scenes depict the Allegories of Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Each season includes the representation of a particularly identifying time of the year. Some characters, dressed in eighteenth-century costumes, are engaged in representative activities. In the summer, there are those who play and read sitting outside, who walk and who gather grain. In spring, shears and works at the cattle stables are described, as well as the movement of potted plants, probably to be placed outdoors. Autumn is focused on the harvest, with grape harvesting and plowing of the fields. The cold winter season, unique with scene described in an indoor environment, illustrates a kitchen with large fireplace while food is cooked on wood and prepared the dough of bread. Below each scene is the title and a proverb dedicated to the season. At the bottom right there is the indication of the engraver: JO. VOLPATO SCULP. VENETIIS. In the lower left one of the creator: C.P.E.S. FRANC.US MAGGIOTTO INV. The four seasons were recorded by Giovan Battista Volpato at the time of his stay in Venice (circa 1770) and the happy artistic partnership with Francesco Maggiotto, responsible for the design of the scenes. Giovanni Trevisan, known as Volpato (Angarano, 1735 - Rome, 25 August 1803) was apprenticed to the Remondini engraving company where he could study the dies of numerous artists. He then moved to Venice with Bartolozzi and later to the workshop of Jospeh Wagner. The practice of etching and then the combined techniques. His technical research is refined and fully realized in Rome where the artist is invited by personalities linked to the papal court with the task of translating into engraving the vaults and pillars of the Vatican Palace Lodges. Francesco Fedeli, known as the Maggiotto (Venice, 1738 - Venice, 13 September 1805), was formed in the style of his father Domenico Fedeli, also called the Maggiotto. Master of painting at the Venetian Academy, of which he became president in 1790, had among his students those who will become prominent personalities of Venetian neoclassicism, such as Lattanzio Querena, Giovanni Carlo Bevilacqua, Natale Schiavoni and even Francesco Hayez. In 1796 he was appointed "Inspector of public paintings of Venice" with the aim of reporting on the state of paintings owned by the public, a function which he maintained even during the beginning of the French occupation. The series, not easy to find on the market of antiques complete all seasons, is very decorative and enjoyable.
