About the Item

Presented is a half bust engraving of Abraham Lincoln, engraved by Charles Burt, after a from-life photo by Mathew Brady. Brady took the photograph in 1864, as the nation was in the final throes of the Civil War. Lincoln is depicted from the shoulders up, in partial profile, and wears a black topcoat, white shirt, and black bowtie. His brow is slightly furrowed and his expression collected. The overall result is a stoic, insightful and skillful rendering of our 16th President. This same photograph was used as the basis for the $5 bill. This engraving is from William Cullen Bryant and Syndey Howard Gay’s “A Popular History of the United States: From the First Discovery of the Western Hemisphere by the Northmen, to the End of the First Century of the Union of the States.” The engraving served as the frontispiece illustration to Vol IV of the publication. William Cullen Bryant, a poet and editor, and Sydney Howard Gay, a journalist, collaborated on the project. The four volumes were published in New York. Volume I was issued in 1876, Volume II in 1878, Volume III in 1878 and the final Volume IV in 1881. It covers the history of the United States from its earliest pre-Columbian history to the end of the first century of the union. Volume I begins with "The Pre-Historic Man" and ends with "New England Colonies. Volume II begins with "The Pequot War" and ends with "Spanish Explorations and Colonization". Volume III begins with "New York Under the English" and ends with "Alliance with France - Proposals for Peace Rejected". Volume IV begins with "Sullivan's Expedition - Fall of Charleston - Arnold's Treason" and ends with "The Closing Scenes of the War". All volumes are profusely illustrated, with full-page and in-text engravings, using wood engravings and steel engravings, and full-page maps. CONDITION: Very good condition.
