African and Moorish Women in Traditional Dress – Rare 1734 Costume Engraving

About the Item

Title: African and Moorish Women in Traditional Dress – Rare 1734 Costume Engraving Description: This finely detailed copperplate engraving from 1734 presents four distinct portrayals of African and Moorish women, each depicted in different modes of dress and cultural context. Originally published in *The Ceremonies and Religious Customs of Various Nations of the Known World*, this image reflects 18th-century Europe's growing interest in ethnographic documentation, particularly in relation to attire, social roles, and customs outside of Europe. The plate is divided into four separate vignettes, each framed and labeled. The upper left shows an “Africaine en habit de cérémonie” (African woman in ceremonial dress). She descends a staircase with graceful composure, wearing a voluminous, draped garment, likely signifying status, ritual importance, or participation in a formal event. Her layered clothing and the architecture suggest a setting of importance or prestige. To the right is “Africaine en déshabillé” (African woman in undress), which does not necessarily imply nudity, but rather informal, indoor attire. She appears indoors, in front of a large curtain, and wears a lighter, looser garment, perhaps indicative of a domestic setting. The scene attempts to contrast public and private dress. The lower left image, “Femme Moresque” (Moorish woman), shows a woman draped in a single cloth, possibly a form of North African wrapper or sari-like fabric. The background, which includes palm trees and block architecture, evokes a Mediterranean or Saharan landscape. Her barefoot posture and the openness of her clothing suggest a more natural or informal context, possibly rural or coastal. The lower right scene is titled “Femme d’Afrique allant par les rues” (African woman walking in the streets). She is fully cloaked in a large wrap, concealing much of her form—indicative of modesty and societal expectations when appearing in public. The setting is likely an urban environment, given the building facades behind her. Collectively, this engraving offers a unique glimpse into how African and North African women's appearances were recorded and interpreted through the European artistic and cultural lens of the early Enlightenment. While the accuracy is undoubtedly filtered by 18th-century European assumptions, it still serves as a fascinating artifact of costume history and early ethnographic publishing. Condition report: Good overall condition. Strong plate impression and clean image detail. Light age-related toning and minimal foxing, mostly in the margins. A slight crease in the lower right corner but no visible tears or repairs. Full margins are present and intact. Framing suggestions: To best display the four-panel layout, use a square or vertical rectangular frame with a soft cream archival mat that separates and highlights each vignette. A dark wood or black frame will provide elegant contrast to the monochrome engraving. UV-filtering glass is recommended to protect the fine lines and aged paper. For added historical charm, consider float mounting to showcase the plate mark and full deckled edges.
