Alexander Calder, 1944 Color Lithograph, Wire Figure Under Red Sun

About the Item

Alexander Calder, 1944 Color Lithograph, Wire Figure Under the Red Sun Alexander Calder (American, 1898–1967)  Signed in plate lower left, in period Chrome frame An original 1944 color lithograph by renowned American artist Alexander Calder (1898–1967) titled Wire Figure Under Red Sun. This lithograph, signed on the plate at the lower left, is beautifully presented in a period chrome frame. The framed piece measures 14.5 inches high, 11.5 inches wide, and 1.5 inches deep. This work is a reflection of Calder's innovative artistic journey, which began in 1936 when he moved to Paris and began creating his iconic wire sculptures. Inspired by his fascination with movement and playfulness, Calder crafted a miniature circus in his studio, featuring wire animals, clowns, and tumblers animated by hand. This lithograph captures the essence of his early explorations in wire sculpture, with the wiry figure depicted against the backdrop of a bold red sun, a symbol frequently used in Calder's works. This piece is a fine example of Calder's ability to merge whimsy and abstraction, making it a wonderful addition to any collection of modern art. It is ready to be placed and enjoyed, bringing a touch of mid-20th-century artistry and Calder's unique vision into your space. His work is a result of Calder's 1936 move to Paris, where he made his first wire sculptures. Calder created a miniature circus in his studio; the animals, clowns, and tumblers were made of wire and animated by hand. Many of his prints, such as this, depict these wiry figures.
