Anna and Maria Tesselschade Visscher – 19th-Century Hand-Colored Lithograph

About the Item

Anna and Maria Tesselschade Visscher – 19th-Century Hand-Colored Lithograph This 19th-century hand-colored lithograph presents a refined interior scene featuring Anna and Maria Tesselschade Visscher, two accomplished sisters from the Dutch Golden Age renowned for their contributions to literature, the arts, and intellectual life. Daughters of the poet and merchant Roemer Visscher, they were central figures in the Muiderkring, a circle of artists, poets, and scholars that included Hooft, Vondel, and Huygens. Maria Tesselschade Visscher (1594–1649), seated in the foreground, was admired not only for her poetry but also for her skill in engraving, glass cutting, and singing. Her older sister Anna Visscher (1583–1651), standing beside her, was a poet and translator who earned praise from many contemporaries for her intellect and talent. The print shows them engaging in cultured activities, with Maria holding a decorative glass object and Anna reading aloud from a book, suggesting the harmony of art, poetry, and domestic refinement. The room is modest but elegant, with a curtained bed and cabinet, emphasizing the private, intellectual world these women inhabited. Drawn by Herman ten Kate and printed by P W van de Weijer in Utrecht around 1850, the lithograph is carefully composed and softly hand-colored, capturing the grace and intellect of these two sisters. This lithograph is in very good condition with strong lines, even tonality, and well-preserved hand coloring. Framing suggestion: An understated gilt or walnut frame with cream or grey archival matting will enhance the refined and contemplative mood of this portrait. Use UV-protective glass to maintain the condition of the print over time. Jacob Cats – Dutch Poet and Statesman, 19th-Century Hand-Colored Lithograph
Located in Langweer, NL
Jacob Cats – Dutch Poet and Statesman, 19th-Century Hand-Colored Lithograph Item Description: This 19th-century hand-colored lithograph portrays Jacob Cats, one of the most beloved poets and moralists of the Dutch Golden Age. Born in 1577, Cats served as a jurist, politician, and Grand Pensionary of Holland, but he is best remembered for his richly illustrated emblem books and rhymed moral teachings that were household staples in the Netherlands for centuries. His work influenced generations of Dutch families and writers alike. Cats is depicted seated at his writing desk, pen in hand, with books and manuscripts surrounding him. His composed yet thoughtful expression, modest attire, and scholarly setting all reflect the dual life he led as both a literary figure and a statesman. The background features shelves of books, a richly patterned tablecloth, and finely detailed textures that emphasize his intellectual world. This lithograph was drawn by W F Hoevenaar and printed by P W van de Weijer in Utrecht. It demonstrates the refined character and quiet dignity often associated with Cats' legacy, rendered with subtle, hand-applied color and careful linework.
