French Engraving Hand Colored Galerie des Modes Costumes Francais, 1779.
Rare antique French fashion print hand colored published first in Paris, 1779. The compositions were based on the most fashionable garments and hairstyles of the period. The plates were widely recognized for their high aesthetic value. The original 18th century prints are no longer to be found. Between 1911 and 1924 Paul Cornu published a reproduction of the series with hand-colored plates. Only a few hundred are accounted for. They can be found at the Frick Art Reference Library and the Museum of Fine Art in Boston. Galerie des Modes was the most expansive and perhaps the best-known Gallery in Paris. The etching is accompanied by a description of the model’s attire. It is marked - Dessiné par le Clerc / Crave par Pelicier / Plate 151
Etching is in good condition. Overall slight darkening and very mild foxing. The etching is glazed and framed.
