About the Item
The image is an original lithograph by Carl Wilhelm Hahn. This print is titled "Procnias ventralis, Illg" and is referred to as "Der kahlichtige Schnappvogel" which can be translated to "The Bald-Like Snapping Bird." The bird depicted is a member of the cotinga family, known for their diverse and often brightly colored plumage and found primarily in South and Central America.
The term "Procnias ventralis" refers to a scientific name, and while "Procnias" is indeed a genus of birds within the cotinga family, the species "ventralis" does not appear to match known species within this genus. The term "Illg" could be an abbreviation or reference to the naturalist who either discovered the species or provided a description for Hahn's work.
This print comes from Hahn's ornithological collection, "Vögel aus Asien, Africa, America & Neuholland in Abbildungen nach der Natur mit Beschreibungen," which included birds from various regions of the world.
