Birth and Naming Rituals of the Banians – Rare 1734 Indian Custom Engraving

About the Item

Title: Birth and Naming Rituals of the Banians – Antique 1734 Engraving of Indian Customs Description: This rare and evocative copperplate engraving, published in 1734 as part of 'The Ceremonies and Religious Customs of Various Nations of the Known World', offers a striking ethnographic depiction of two important life-cycle rituals among the Banians (an 18th-century European term for certain Hindu merchant castes of India). The plates are drawn and engraved with remarkable care and detail, attributed to Bernard Picart and his studio, and stand out as some of the earliest European visual records of Indian customs. The upper half of the print is titled "Ceremonie qui s’observe à la Naissance des Enfans chez les Banians" and presents a domestic interior where women and attendants gather around a mother nursing her newborn. The scene is emotionally expressive, showing the child being offered the breast (label A), a child rejecting the breast (label B), and the severe cultural belief at the time that a child who continued to refuse the breast after three days was to be cast into the Ganges (label C), reflecting European interpretations of Indian religious fatalism. A window opens onto a lush tropical landscape, with palm trees and temple architecture hinting at the geographic and cultural setting. The lower image, "Ceremonie de donner le Nom à un Enfant chez les Banians," depicts the joyous naming ceremony of a child. The infant is laid on a cloth held by multiple children or young attendants, surrounded by adults, including a priestly figure who may be performing rites or announcing the name. A richly adorned interior and an exotic temple landscape outside reinforce the cultural specificity of the scene. Each figure is delicately rendered, and the composition is dynamic and full of life. Together, the two plates reflect the Enlightenment fascination with documenting the diverse customs of the world through both visual and written means. These engravings are as much artistic as they are anthropological, shaped by a European lens yet providing valuable insight into how non-Western traditions were perceived and portrayed in the early 18th century. Condition report: This print is in fair to good condition. The impression is sharp and well-defined, with the engraved details still strong. There is foxing throughout the sheet, particularly in the margins, and a stain is visible on the right edge near the lower image. The paper is otherwise stable and untrimmed, preserving the full original plate mark and margin width. Framing suggestion: A double-window mat would work beautifully for this two-image composition, separating and emphasizing each ritual scene. Use an archival cream or soft beige mat to complement the antique tones of the paper, and consider a dark walnut or black wood frame for contrast. For preservation, UV-protective glass and acid-free backing are essential, particularly given the paper's age and evidence of foxing. Displaying this piece as a visual document of cultural history can make it a compelling addition to any ethnographic or art collection.
