Habits et Maisons des Floridiens is a beautiful black and white etching 8 engraving on copper) on wire rod paper realized by Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772), from volume 14 by the monk Prevos "Histoire générale des voyages, ou, Nouvelle collection de toutes les relations de voyages par mer et par terre".
Title on plate on higher margin at the center, inscription son plate on lower margin: "Tom XIV/ N. IV"
This is an original print representing an interesting and folkloristic view of an early Florida settlement surrounded by palm trees with early settlers in the foreground and near stilts or pilings.
In very good conditions, except for stains on the higher margin, and a usual yellowing of the paper at the edge, some visibile little stains on lower margin. these defects do not affect the image.

Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772)
One of the most important mapmakers of the eighteenth century, the name of Jacques Nicolas Bellin Setting is still today a synonymous of a high standard French carthography. His old maps gained fame and a strong distinction all over Europe and were republished throughout the 18th and even in the succeeding century.
In 1721, when he was 18, he was appointed hydrographer (chief cartographer) to the French Navy. In August 1741, he was named Official Hydrographer of the French King. During this period, he also produced a number of sea-atlases of the world. He contributed with high definition maps to the 15-volume Histoire Generale des Voyages by Antoine François Prévost or simply known the monk Prevost.

Jacques-Nicolas Bellin
Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703 –1772) was a French hydrographer (official cartographer) and a geographer. While still a teenager he became the chief cartographer to the French Navy and later to the king of France. Bellin created a large number of maps for Antoine François Prévost's (L'Abbe Prevost) 'Histoire Generale des Voyages', which was a 25 volume publication focused on 17th and 18th century exploration.It was published in French, Dutch and German. He also contributed maps and articles to the 35-volume Encyclopédie edited by Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d'Alembert. He was part of the group called Philosophes, which included many of the great intellectuals of the Age of Enlightenment, including Voltaire, Rousseau and Montesquieu. Bellin died at Versailles in 1772.
