Roman Costume is an original hand-colored etching artwork realized by Bartolomeo Pinelli in 1819. Signed by the artist on the plate, dated lower left "Roma, 1819", titled in Italian on the lower center. Good conditions. Included a white Passepartout: 34 x 49 The artwork represents a family with a little child in traditional Roman costume, skillfully depicted through soft and precise strokes, the artwork is created with congruous harmonious colors from historical costume evidence. In addition to its intrinsic artistic value, the artist's work as an illustrator has a significant documentary significance in the ethnography of Italy and Switzerland. Bartolomeo Pinelli (Rome, November 20, 1781 - Rome, April 1, 1835) was an Italian engraver, painter and ceramist. An extremely prolific graphic artist, it has recently been estimated that he has produced about four thousand engravings and ten thousand drawings. In his prints he illustrated the costumes of the Italian people, the great masterpieces of literature: Virgilio, Dante, Tasso, Ariosto, Cervantes, Manzoni, and subjects of Roman, Greek, Napoleonic history, etc. The most recurring theme in general is Rome, its inhabitants, its monuments, the ancient city and the one that is contemporary to him. He had among his pupils the well-known portrait painter from Gorizia Giuseppe Tominz.

    This framed 18th century etching by Giovanni Battista Piranesi is entitled "Dimostransi nella Tav. presente la Pianta, ed Elevazione del Ponte, oggi detto Quattro Capi egli è antichissimo, e chiamavasi Fabrizio da L. Fabrizio Presid. delle Strade, che lo fabbrico' nel fine della Repubblica. "(The Plan and Elevation of the Bridge, today called Quattro Capi. The architect is very ancient, and was called Fabrizio da L. Fabrizio Presid. delle Strade, who built it at the end of the Republic). This is plate 18 in volume 4 of Piranesi's "Le antichita romane opera di Giambatista Piranesi architetto veneziano" (Roman antiquities by Giambatista Piranesi Venetian architect). It was published in Rome in 1756-1757. This etching depicts the plan and elevation of the bridge now called the Ponte dei Quattoro Capi or Ponte Cestio (Bridge of the Four Heads), which in antiquity was called the Bridge of Fabricius after L. Fabricius, the Superintendant of the Streets who built it at the end of the Republic, around 62 BC. It was also been known in the Middle Ages as ‘Ponte Giudeo’ (Bridge of the Jews).     Early 19th century etching entitled "Veduta dello scavo del Foro Trajano" from Luigi Rossini's "Le Antichita Romane" (Ancient Rome), published in Rome in 1823.
