About the Item
Black Tern – Antique Bird Lithograph by John Gould, c.1832
This elegant antique lithograph features the Black Tern (Sterna nigra), a graceful marshland bird illustrated in full breeding plumage alongside its lighter winter form. Created by the celebrated English ornithologist and artist John Gould, this print was published between 1832 and 1837 in his monumental work Birds of Europe—a foundational ornithological series admired by scientists and art collectors alike.
The Black Tern, known for its agile flight and distinctive charcoal-black summer coloration, is shown here in a soft wetland setting. Gould masterfully conveys the bird’s elegant proportions and subtle contrasts in plumage, with reeds gently framing the composition. This dual depiction of seasonal plumage adds both scientific and artistic depth, showcasing the bird's transformation across its migratory cycle.
John Gould (1804–1881) combined scientific insight with artistic excellence, and his prints are regarded as some of the finest ornithological illustrations of the 19th century. Each lithograph was hand-colored, lending vibrant realism to the species portrayed. This particular plate reflects the nuanced naturalism that defined Gould's work and remains an important visual record of Europe's birdlife before photography.

John Gould
John Gould was an English ornithologist and bird artist. He published several monographs on birds, illustrated by plates that he produced with the assistance of his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and several other artists including Edward Lear, Henry Constantine Richter, Joseph Wolf and William Matthew Hart. Gould has been considered the father of bird study in Australia, and the Gould League in Australia is named after him. His identification of the birds now nicknamed Darwin's finches played a role in the inception of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. Gould's work is referenced in Charles Darwin's book, On the Origin of Species.
