Boar Hunting Scene by Matthäus Merian, after Antonio Tempesta, circa 1630

About the Item

Title: Scena di Caccia al Cinghiale – Boar Hunting Scene by Matthäus Merian, after Antonio Tempesta This 17th-century etching, titled Scena di Caccia al Cinghiale (Boar Hunting Scene), was engraved by Matthäus Merian (1593–1650) after a design by Antonio Tempesta (1555–1630). The print depicts an intense hunting scene where two hunters, positioned near a tree with their rifles and accompanied by a horse, carefully observe a group of wild boars roaming in a detailed natural landscape. Measuring 141 x 196 mm (plate size), the etching showcases meticulous detail, especially in the foliage, animals, and figures. The shading and composition bring depth and movement to the scene, reflecting Merian’s refined skill as an engraver. This work is part of the 'Scene di Caccia' series, produced during the first half of the 17th century, and published by Peter Aubry II in Strasbourg. The print is in good condition, and protected by a matting board, the image remains clear and well-defined. Matthäus Merian was a prominent Swiss engraver known for his precision and landscape works, while Antonio Tempesta’s dynamic compositions influenced generations of artists in the Baroque period. This print highlights the period’s fascination with hunting scenes, which symbolized both noble pursuits and artistic subjects. It serves as a fine example of 17th-century printmaking, ideal for collectors of hunting art or Baroque engravings.
