Botanical Engraving of Narcissus Flowers, Framed, Amsterdam 1655

About the Item

Narcissus Botanical Engraving, Hand-Colored, Framed, c.1655 Amsterdam This beautifully framed botanical engraving is an exquisite original copperplate print from circa 1655, attributed to the influential Dutch botanist Emanuel Sweert (Sweertius), with publication likely under Johannes Janssonius in Amsterdam. The plate, marked Tab. CLX, presents a finely detailed and hand-colored composition of various *Narcissus* (daffodil) species. Each specimen is labeled with Latin names, indicative of the period’s scientific ambition and botanical precision. Sweert’s florilegia, particularly his 'Florilegium', were prized not only for their documentation of rare plants from European gardens and botanical collections but also for their artistry. This specific engraving features a carefully composed vertical arrangement of narcissus varieties in bloom — including white, yellow, blue, orange, and lilac blossoms — rendered with remarkable accuracy and refinement. The etching's strong outlines, delicate shading, and vibrant yet naturalistic hand coloring combine to create a striking visual balance. The result is both scientific and decorative: a piece that satisfies scholarly interest as well as aesthetic appeal. This print has been expertly framed with a deep olive green silk mat, complemented by a gilt inner filet and a beaded gold outer frame that enhances its 17th-century character. The matting and scale give the work a museum-quality presentation, allowing it to shine either as a standalone decorative accent or as part of a collection of historical botanical art. Condition: The engraving is in very good condition for its age, with strong impressions and well-preserved coloring. The laid paper has some light age toning and a few minimal foxing marks, which do not detract from the overall impact. The framing is recent and in excellent condition, professionally mounted and ready to hang. Framing Tips: This piece pairs beautifully with both antique and modern interiors. Its natural palette works well with muted greens, golds, and warm neutrals. Hang it near natural light, in a study, hallway, or drawing room for maximum visual appeal. Grouping it with other 17th- or 18th-century botanical prints will create a sophisticated and timeless display.
