About the Item
Original heliogravure by Brassaï, published in Verve Vol. I No. 1 (December 1937), Éditions Verve, Paris. This night scene, capturing an explosion of fireworks in a mysterious urban setting, embodies the surreal poetic intensity for which Brassaï is internationally celebrated. The bursts of light and smoke emerge from the darkness like ghosts, framed by the silhouette of an anonymous figure—a moment suspended between spectacle and enigma.
Brassaï, born Gyula Halász, was one of the most iconic photographers of the 20th century. Closely linked to the Parisian avant-garde, he was admired by figures such as Picasso and the Surrealists. His contribution to Verve—a revolutionary publication founded by Tériade and printed at Mourlot Frères—demonstrates the rare ability to merge documentary precision with symbolic and emotional depth.
This is an original plate from the deluxe first edition of Verve, one of the most ambitious art publications of the 20th century, featuring contributions by Matisse, Miró, Bonnard, and Cartier-Bresson.

Erwin Blumenfeld
Erwin Blumenfeld (26 January 1897 – 4 July 1969) was an American Jewish photographer of German origin. Born in Berlin, in 1941 he emigrated to the United States, where he soon became a successful and well-paid fashion photographer, working as a freelancer for Harper's Bazaar, Life and American Vogue. His photographic work showed the influence of Dadaism and Surrealism; as is clear in this black and white version of a cover he produced for Vogue on January 1, 1950, featuring the model Jean Patchett.
