Costume Print: Italian Gestures with Traditional Dress, 1820s Hand-Colored Engraving
This engaging hand-colored engraving, titled *Italian Gestures*, captures a lively moment in Italian street life by pairing traditional regional dress with the famously expressive gestures of Italian communication. Published in 1821 by Baldwin, Cradock & Joy, this print was part of a broader ethnographic series designed to introduce English and European audiences to the daily customs, occupations, and attire of 19th-century Italy.
Three figures are arranged across the composition, each caught in a different pose that conveys both emotion and cultural nuance. On the left, a woman in a yellow skirt and green headscarf points emphatically with the gesture labeled "Badate!!" (Take care!!), a warning or admonition. At center, a man in green trousers, blue vest, red sash, and ochre cloak extends both arms with palms up—his expression and the caption “Troppo tardi” (Too late) suggesting exasperation or resignation. On the right, a woman holding a basket of grapes, dressed in a blue skirt, yellow apron, and red bodice, gestures with a raised hand, her caption reading “Non è possibile” (It’s not possible), clearly expressing disbelief or refusal.
What makes this print especially fascinating is its portrayal of body language as a distinct component of Italian identity. These gestures, so essential to interpersonal communication, are frozen here in bright, animated form. Combined with the regional costume details—each rendered in vivid hand coloring—this image serves not only as a costume study but as a humorous and insightful window into character and culture.
The artist, identified as Bartolomeo Pinelli or attributed to Achille Devéria in some variations, worked closely with engravers to capture both the authenticity and theatricality of everyday scenes.
