About the Item

Title: Dachshunds – Antique Dog Illustration, 1915 This charming early 20th-century print depicts two Dachshunds, one standing alert in the foreground and the other resting on a wooden bench in the background. The artist captures the breed’s distinctive elongated body, short legs, and long, expressive head, emphasizing their alert and intelligent expressions. The detailed line work highlights the smooth coat texture, muscular build, and characteristic low stance of this beloved breed. Originating from Dogs of All Nations by W. E. Mason, published in 1915, this illustration belongs to one of the most influential early reference works on dog breeds worldwide. At the time, Dachshunds were already prized for their versatility as both hunting companions and loyal household pets. Originally bred in Germany to flush out badgers and other burrowing animals, their name translates to “badger dog” in German. The composition is a fine example of period canine portraiture, with naturalistic surroundings suggesting a kennel or rustic wooden outbuilding. The standing Dachshund faces forward with a focused posture, while the seated companion appears relaxed yet attentive, giving the viewer two contrasting poses of the breed. Condition: Very good for its age, with only mild toning typical of early 20th-century prints. No major tears or repairs visible. Plate mark present and clear. The print is mounted on a blue backing, giving it an attractive presentation for display. Framing tips: A medium to dark wooden frame paired with a cream or muted grey mount would enhance the contrast of the black-and-white illustration. A warm-toned mount could also work to complement the gold-edged mat. UV-protective glass is recommended for preservation. Technique: Halftone engraving Maker: W. E. Mason, United States, 1915
