"Dance of Salome, " Rare, Atmospheric Print by Herrmann, Important Innovator

About the Item

Highly atmospheric and charged with sensuality, this Art Nouveau-influenced print by Paul Herrmann (also known as Henri Heran) depicts the infamous dance of Salome at its center, in a diaphanous swirl of drapery and nudity, with two nude male youths in the foreground, and the seated figure of Herod looking on in satisfaction. One can almost smell the decadence and despotism in the air. Herrmann was an important innovator in printmaking, experimenting with color lithography in the 1890s before Munch and others better known for their work. The artist settled in Paris, and took on the name of Henri Heran, to minimize the wariness of French patrons and peers at a time of anti-German sentiment. This is the only example of this print we have seen.
