About the Item

Erich Heckel (1883-1970) “Still Life with Tulips” Original lithograph on handmade paper Created in 1953 Signed and dated by hand at the bottom right Edition of 250 copies Dube WVZ No. 353 IIIB Framed with museum glass 52 cm x 65 cm frame size 37.5 cm x 32.5 cm image size Date and place of birth: July 31, 1883, Döbeln Date and place of death: January 27, 1970, Radolfzell am Bodensee Biography Erich Heckel Erich Heckel was a co-founder of the Dresden artists' group “Brücke” (1905 to 1913) and is considered one of the most important protagonists of Expressionism. In order to oppose traditional values, he and his friends developed innovative means of expression for the pictorial representation of their own feelings. To this end, they explored the paintings of Van Gogh, Munch, Gauguin, and the Nabis, as well as the art of indigenous peoples, and created the “Brücke style”: using pure, often complementary colors and simplified forms, they sought to translate subjective perception into art in a spontaneous and unadulterated way. The “academy of arts in the open air” was of particular importance to them. Their nude depictions in untouched landscapes evoke the harmonious unity of man and nature and thus the return to an earthly paradise. In 1904, Heckel began studying architecture at the Technical University in Dresden, but dropped out after a short time. In 1905, he founded “Die Brücke” (The Bridge) with Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Fritz Bleyl, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. After moving to Berlin in 1911, he turned away from the sensual “Brücke style” with melancholic paintings in dark colors and angular lines. At this time, he met Franz Marc, August Macke, Lionel Feininger, and Wilhelm Lehmbruck. From 1915 to 1918, he was drafted into military service. Through his contact with Stefan George's circle, Heckel then brought romantic-idealistic traits to his compositions in the 1920s. On his numerous trips throughout Europe from 1921 to 1945, he painted brightly colored, poetic landscapes and cityscapes. From 1933 onwards, his art was defamed as “degenerate” and during World War II he suffered the loss of many works in bombing raids. From 1949 to 1955, he taught at the academy in Karlsruhe. In his late work, Heckel mainly created landscapes, circus scenes, and still lifes in delicate colors, sometimes abstracting the forms into ornamentation. Among the many honors Heckel received were the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit in 1953 and the Pour le mérite for Science and Arts in 1967. Erich Heckel died in 1970 in Rudolfzell on Lake Constance. Erich Heckel is represented in the following museums and institutions, among others: - Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin - Brücke Museum, Berlin - Kunstmuseum Bonn - Kunstmuseum Moritzburg, Halle a.d. Saale - Sprengel Museum Hannover - Museum Ludwig, Cologne - Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich - Kirchner Museum Davos (Switzerland) - Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid (Spain) - Museum of Modern Art, New York (USA)
