About the Item
A rare and exquisitely printed heliogravure by legendary photographer Erwin Blumenfeld, published in the first edition of Verve, the iconic French art and literature journal founded in 1937 by Tériade. This black-and-white nude is a powerful and intimate portrait that exemplifies Blumenfeld’s mastery of light, contrast, and abstraction.
Printed in rich deep blacks with subtle tonal gradations, the image was reproduced using heliogravure—a meticulous photomechanical process that renders unparalleled depth and texture, often reserved for high-end editions and museum-quality publications.
This work comes from Verve Vol. I, No. 1 (December 1937), one of the most important and collectible issues of the avant-garde publication, which featured contributions from Matisse, Léger, Bonnard, and many of the leading modernists of the time.
Framed in high-quality black lacquered wood with off-white mat board. Frame shown is an example—final framing will be done upon order, ensuring personalized archival mounting. Proportions of matting may vary slightly to accommodate the specific print.

Erwin Blumenfeld
Erwin Blumenfeld (26 January 1897 – 4 July 1969) was an American Jewish photographer of German origin. Born in Berlin, in 1941 he emigrated to the United States, where he soon became a successful and well-paid fashion photographer, working as a freelancer for Harper's Bazaar, Life and American Vogue. His photographic work showed the influence of Dadaism and Surrealism; as is clear in this black and white version of a cover he produced for Vogue on January 1, 1950, featuring the model Jean Patchett.
