Geology Print of Mineral Forms and Crystal Structures by T Bromme c1865

About the Item

Geology Print of Mineral Forms and Crystal Structures by T Bromme c1865 This striking 19th-century hand-colored lithograph was published circa 1865 by Traugott Bromme, a renowned German geographer and educator, as part of his ambitious *Illustrirter Hand-Atlas der Erde und der Menschheit*. The plate provides a detailed overview of crystallography and mineral formations, offering a unique combination of scientific classification and visual appeal. It would have served as an educational tool in geology and mineralogy at a time when natural sciences were becoming increasingly systematized. The top half of the plate is dedicated to crystal structures, illustrating geometric models of fundamental crystal shapes: cubes, octahedrons, rhombohedrons, pyramids, and more complex polyhedra. These diagrams are paired with specific mineral specimens below, many of which are identified with corresponding numbers, linking the theoretical forms to natural examples. The lower two-thirds of the composition showcases a series of vividly rendered mineral specimens in rich tones of red, ochre, green, yellow, and black. Each sample exhibits distinctive surface patterns, textures, and coloration, capturing the diversity of mineral types found in nature. The illustrations highlight the structural variety and visual richness of geological specimens, from striated and foliated textures to crystalline masses and banded ores. This lithograph is notable for blending formal crystallographic diagrams with painterly representations of minerals—making it valuable both as a teaching aid and a decorative print. It reflects a mid-19th-century fascination with the scientific classification of the natural world and is a superb example of early geological illustration. Condition report: Original hand-colored lithograph by T Bromme, circa 1865. In very good condition with light toning at the edges and minor foxing. Colors remain vibrant and the sheet is structurally sound, with no tears or repairs. Tips for framing: Pair with a light cream or stone-colored mat to accentuate the detail of the minerals and geometric forms. A black or walnut wood frame offers refined contrast. Suitable for display in libraries, studies, science collections, or interiors with a natural history or academic theme.
