About the Item
A copperplate print from 1752, showcasing portraits of six Incan rulers from different periods. Each ruler is depicted within a circular frame, symbolizing their historical and cultural significance. The rulers shown are:
1. Inca Roca (6th Sapa Inca): Known for his efforts to improve the administration of the Inca state and for cultural advancements during his reign.
2. Yahuar Huacac (7th Sapa Inca): Noted for facing significant challenges during his reign, including internal strife and external threats.
3. Viracocha Inca (8th Sapa Inca): Recognized for expanding the Inca Empire significantly and implementing administrative reforms.
4. Pachacuti (9th Sapa Inca): Famously transformed the Kingdom of Cusco into the vast and powerful Inca Empire and initiated the construction of the iconic Machu Picchu.
5. Yupanqui (10th Sapa Inca): Often identified with Tupac Yupanqui, who continued the expansion of the empire and enriched its culture and architecture.
6. Tupac Yupanqui (11th Sapa Inca): Known for his expansive military campaigns, which greatly extended the borders of the Inca Empire.
Each ruler holds symbolic items, such as staffs and weapons, indicating their authority and the militaristic nature of the empire. The art style reflects the European influence of the period, focusing on detailed and formal representations, which was typical in historical documentation at the time.
Make of the print is unknown. More research needed.
