Limited edition "Images of Children" woodcut entitled "Irish Kids" by Will Barnet, circa 1982. This a second printing of a suite of 8 woodcuts and etchings created from 1937 to 1940; the print has the chop of the printer, Stephen Sholinsky, in the lower right. The piece is hand signed, titled and numbered (12 / 60); it is in very good vintage condition and comes unframed with a two page protective jacket. The woodcut measures 11.5" x 9". #1531

Born in Beverly, Massachusetts, Barnet attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston from 1928-30. He later won a 3-year scholarship to the Art Students League, New York, where he focused on printmaking. Throughout his career, he mastered a variety of techniques, including etching, woodcut and lithography, such as the current lot. An extremely dynamic artist, Barnet changed his style significantly throughout his career. His earliest graphic works captured the social and economic despair which resulted from the Great Depression; during these years he also worked for the WPA, producing prints for the graphics arts division.

Will Barnet
At the beginning of his career, Will Barnet was known for his figural depictions of domestic scenes. But, as he continued to stylistically develop, Barnet arrived at abstract geometric paintings far removed from his original career. A part of the Indian Space Painters group, Barnet was inspired by Native American art in creating these divergent images. Throughout his career, Barnet oscillated between representational and abstract paintings, never fully settling on one. He has received the National Medal of Arts in 2011, and his work has been displayed at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
