About the Item

**Title:** Islamic Architecture Print Mosque of Omar Jerusalem, 1863 Dutch Lithograph **Description:** This refined 19th-century lithograph titled “De Moskee van Omar te Jeruzalem” (The Mosque of Omar in Jerusalem) offers a European interpretation of the Dome of the Rock, one of the most iconic and religiously significant buildings in the Islamic world. With its monumental dome and octagonal structure, the building has stood on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount since the late 7th century, marking the site traditionally associated with the Prophet Muhammad’s Night Journey and ascension to heaven (*Mi'raj*). The composition presents the mosque in stark architectural clarity. The central dome rises with quiet grandeur, rendered in elegant linework and shading, and the surrounding colonnades and adjoining domed structure offer viewers a carefully measured perspective of Islamic architectural harmony. In the foreground, several figures in Ottoman-era dress provide historical and cultural context, emphasizing the connection between faith, tradition, and place. This lithograph was issued in 1863 as part of the Dutch publication *De Voornaamste Godsdiensten* (The Principal Religions), within the section *Het Islamisme*, authored by the distinguished scholar Dr. Reinhart Pieter Anne Dozy. Dozy, a professor at the University of Leiden, was among the most influential Orientalists of his time. His writings introduced European readers to the complexities of Islamic history, geography, and belief systems with scholarly depth and a progressive tone for the 19th century. The lithographic work was executed by Emrik & Binger, a prominent lithography studio based in Haarlem, known for producing technically precise and artistically accomplished prints. Their rendering of this scene is understated yet rich in detail, capturing the solemnity of one of the most revered locations in Islam and offering a rare visual record for European audiences of the time. This print serves as an important historical artifact, reflecting 19th-century European scholarly interest in Islamic sacred architecture and contributing to the growing visual documentation of the Middle East during the period of expanding academic Orientalism. Condition Summary: In very good condition with minimal foxing. Framing Tips: Best presented with a soft cream or natural parchment-colored mat and a black, mahogany, or walnut frame to enhance the architectural elegance and spiritual significance of this historical lithograph.
