Islamic Holy Sites Print Mecca and the Sacred Places, 1863 Dutch Lithograph

About the Item

Islamic Holy Sites Print Mecca and the Sacred Places, 1863 Dutch Lithograph This magnificent 19th-century lithograph titled “Mekka en de Heilige Plaatsen” (Mecca and the Holy Places) offers a sweeping bird’s-eye view of Islam’s most sacred city. The central focus of the composition is the Great Mosque (Masjid al-Haram), encircling the Kaaba, the black cube-shaped sanctuary considered the holiest site in Islam. The scene is alive with detail—pilgrims circumambulating the Kaaba, the colonnades of the mosque, and the densely packed city of Mecca spreading outward, surrounded by rocky hills and desert roads. In the foreground, a broad, winding path shows the route of the pilgrimage, connecting other significant ritual sites such as Mina, Muzdalifah, Mount Arafat, and the well of Zamzam. Each is labeled with a number, corresponding to a legend beneath the print listing these sacred locations, including: 1. The Black Stone 2. Station of Abraham 3. Safa 4. Mina 5. Muzdalifah 6. Arafat The print is not only visually impressive but also intellectually informative. It was published in 1863 as part of the Dutch series *De Voornaamste Godsdiensten* (The Principal Religions), specifically in the volume *Het Islamisme* (Islam), authored by Dr. Reinhart Pieter Anne Dozy. A prominent Dutch Arabist and professor at Leiden University, Dozy was known for his detailed and relatively objective writings on the Islamic world, seeking to educate European readers about Islam’s traditions, texts, and geography. This lithograph was executed by the highly regarded printing house Emrik & Binger of Haarlem, known for their technical excellence and documentary accuracy. Their skill is evident in the clarity of architectural details, the dynamic human figures, and the sense of depth conveyed in the distant hills and bustling streets of Mecca. As a historical document, this print provides a rare 19th-century European perspective on the sacred geography of Islam, making it a valuable item for collectors of religious art, Middle Eastern history, and visual ethnography. Condition Summary: Well-preserved with only light age spots in margins and in the clouds. Framing Tips: Frame with a pale ivory mat and a deep brown or charcoal black frame to emphasize the fine architectural lines and historical depth of this panoramic sacred landscape.
