Islamic Landscape Print Mina Valley Near Mecca, 1863 Dutch Lithograph

About the Item

Islamic Landscape Print Mina Valley Near Mecca, 1863 Dutch Lithograph This finely rendered 19th-century lithograph titled “Minâ” depicts the valley of Mina, located just east of Mecca, one of the key sites of the Islamic pilgrimage (Hajj). The image offers a detailed view of this historically significant area, which plays host to millions of pilgrims during the annual Hajj rites. Mina is especially notable as the site of the ritual stoning of the three pillars symbolizing Satan (Jamarat) and for housing the large encampment of pilgrims. In this lithograph, a row of traditional Arabian-style buildings lines the base of the rugged, rocky hills in the background, while the foreground is dotted with pitched tents and camel caravans. These tents represent the temporary lodging of pilgrims during their multi-day stay in Mina. The arrangement of figures and animals is carefully composed to provide both ethnographic accuracy and visual rhythm, giving life to this otherwise arid landscape. This print was originally published in 1863 as part of the Dutch illustrated educational series *De Voornaamste Godsdiensten* (The Principal Religions), within the volume titled *Het Islamisme*, authored by Dr. Reinhart Pieter Anne Dozy. Dozy, a renowned Dutch Arabist and professor at the University of Leiden, was celebrated for his scholarly work on Islamic history, Arabic language, and the cultural practices of Muslim societies. His approach was unusually detailed and neutral for the time, offering a thoughtful and educational lens through which European audiences could gain insight into Islamic life. The lithograph was created by the Haarlem-based firm Emrik & Binger, specialists in high-quality documentary lithography. Their work is evident in the crisp architectural lines, the textured mountain backdrop, and the subtle tonal gradations that add atmosphere and depth. This print is not only a visual document but also a window into 19th-century European interest in and representation of the Islamic world. Condition Report: This print is in good condition with some light foxing in the margins. Framing Tips: Use a light cream or sand-colored mat with a dark brown or black frame to highlight the fine architectural and topographical detailing of this historic 19th-century landscape.
