About the Item

Islamic Pilgrimage Print Mount Arafat During Hajj, 1863 Dutch Lithograph This striking lithograph titled “De Berg Arafa Gedurende de Bedevaart” (Mount Arafat During the Pilgrimage) captures a significant and deeply spiritual moment in the Islamic Hajj. The image centers on Mount Arafat, the revered site east of Mecca where pilgrims gather for the climax of the Hajj rituals. On the mountain’s summit, small figures can be seen ascending the path toward the “Mount of Mercy,” the traditional location where the Prophet Muhammad delivered his Farewell Sermon. The viewpoint chosen by the artist emphasizes both the sacred geography and the vast number of pilgrims. The foreground is framed by the remains of two arched stone structures, perhaps evoking an imagined gateway, offering a symbolic passage into the sacred scene beyond. Countless tents fill the plain below the mountain, representing the temporary encampment of pilgrims who congregate there annually for the ritual of *wuquf*, or standing in prayer from noon to sunset—a key requirement for completing the pilgrimage. This lithograph was published in 1863 as part of the Dutch series 'De Voornaamste Godsdiensten' (The Principal Religions), specifically in the volume 'Het Islamisme' (Islam), created under the direction of Dr. Reinhart Pieter Anne Dozy. Dozy was a pioneering Dutch Arabist and professor at Leiden University, whose work played a crucial role in expanding European understanding of Islamic history and religious practices through rigorous scholarship. Executed by the prominent lithographic firm Emrik & Binger of Haarlem, this image exemplifies their skill in creating accurate and atmospheric documentary prints. The firm’s delicate line work and controlled shading techniques give the composition both clarity and emotional resonance. It was likely intended for educational and ethnographic purposes, offering a rare 19th-century European perspective on one of Islam’s holiest rites. Condition Report: Well-preserved with some light foxing in the margins. Framing Tips: Frame with a natural-toned or parchment mat and a dark wood or bronze-finish frame to evoke historical dignity and to accentuate the delicate topographical detailing of this important site.
