About the Item
Islamic Relic Print The Black Stone of Mecca, 1863 Dutch Lithograph
This fascinating lithograph titled “De Zwarte Steen” (The Black Stone) presents a rare and detailed 19th-century European rendering of one of Islam’s most sacred relics: the Black Stone embedded in the Kaaba at Mecca. Composed with meticulous pointillist precision, the image shows the famed object in its encasement, revealing its fragmented, oval form composed of several dark pieces surrounded by a silver frame. It offers a remarkably close-up and accurate visualization, uncommon in Western print culture of the time, particularly given the general inaccessibility of Mecca to non-Muslims during that period.
This lithograph was published in 1863 as part of the Dutch illustrated series *De Voornaamste Godsdiensten* (The Principal Religions), in the section titled *Het Islamisme* (Islam), authored by Dr. Reinhart Pieter Anne Dozy, a renowned Dutch historian and Orientalist. Dozy, a professor at Leiden University, was recognized for his scholarly contributions to the understanding of Arabic and Islamic culture in Europe. His writings were pioneering in their objective treatment of Islamic history and customs, especially for a 19th-century European audience.
The lithograph itself was produced by the Haarlem-based lithographic firm Emrik & Binger, known for their finely executed educational and documentary illustrations. Their technical proficiency is evident in the tonal depth and accuracy of the stippling technique used here, which lends the surface of the stone a realistic, almost tactile quality. As both a religious symbol and historical artifact, this print has exceptional documentary value. It serves not only as a visual aid in understanding Islamic pilgrimage but also as a testament to the academic curiosity and printmaking craftsmanship of the era.
