About the Item

Landing Through the Surf – Ceram, late 19th-century hand-coloured wood engraving Description: A vivid late 19th-century hand-coloured wood engraving depicting a dramatic coastal landing on the island of Ceram (Seram) in the Maluku Islands, Indonesia. Titled “Landing Through the Surf—Ceram,” the scene captures the moment when a large surf wave breaks against a rocky cliff as a longboat, towed by a large group of islanders on the beach, approaches the shore. The composition shows a coordinated effort, with dozens of men hauling the rope along a palm-lined path, while the boat, laden with goods and covered by a thatched shelter, rides the swell. In the distance, another vessel sails offshore. The image reflects both the geographical character of the Maluku Islands—steep cliffs, tropical vegetation, and powerful surf—and the logistical challenges of landing boats in such conditions. This type of scene was a popular subject in illustrated travel accounts and ethnographic publications of the Victorian era, intended to convey both exoticism and the skill of local communities in navigating their environment. The engraving is rich in detail: the densely rendered coconut palms, the textured cliff face, the foaming crest of the wave, and the rhythmic line of figures along the shore create a strong sense of movement and place. The careful hand-colouring adds depth and vibrancy, with greens of the tropical foliage, golden tones of the sandy beach, and the blue-grey of the sea under a lightly clouded sky. Condition report: Very good condition. Colours bright and well-preserved. Light, even toning to the paper, with no visible tears or creases. Comes with double Brown-Cream White matting board. Framing tips: A natural wood or dark brown frame will complement the earthy tones, while a cream or warm white mat will highlight the scene’s vivid colouring. For a more dramatic presentation, a double mount with a narrow inner line echoing the green of the palms would enhance the tropical feel. Technique: Hand-coloured wood engraving on paper Maker: Anonymous illustrator, published late 19th century, likely in a travel or ethnographic volume
