About the Item
The Shawnee Sentinel: Qua-Ta-Wa-Pea, A Chief of Poise and Peace
A hand-colored lithograph of Qua-Ta-Wa-Pea, also known as Leatherlips, a respected leader of the Shawnee tribe. This print is also from the influential "History of the Indian Tribes of North America," with original works based on paintings by Charles Bird King and others.
Charles Bird King was an esteemed American portraitist of the early 19th century, who painted many Native American leaders. His work served as a valuable record of these figures at a time when the cultures and lives of Native American tribes were undergoing profound changes.
Qua-Ta-Wa-Pea is depicted with a calm and dignified expression, wearing a blue cloak with fur trim and a distinctive red headpiece adorned with circular patterns. His attire reflects his status and perhaps European influences, a common occurrence among Native American leaders who engaged in diplomatic relations with European Americans during this era. A silver peace medal hangs around his neck, symbolizing relationships between the Shawnee and the United States government, as such medals were often given to Native American leaders by U.S. officials as tokens of peace and diplomacy.
The Shawnee are a Native American tribe originally from the northeastern woodlands. Historically, they were a semi-nomadic people who moved across various states, including Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Illinois. The Shawnee language is part of the large Algonquian language family. They played a significant role in resistance against the colonial encroachment in their territories, with leaders such as Tecumseh, who is among the most famous Shawnee.
Qua-Ta-Wa-Pea's leadership was during a turbulent time as the Shawnee navigated the challenges of maintaining their culture and land in the face of expanding European-American settlements. His portrayal in this lithograph communicates a sense of stoic leadership and serves as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Shawnee people.

Located in Alamo, CA
This is an original 19th century hand-colored folio-sized lithographic portrait of a Native American entitled "Tah-Chee, A Cherokee Chief", from McKenney and Hall's 'History of the Indian Tribes of North America'. It was lithographed by J. T. Bowen after a painting by Charles Bird King and published by E. C. Biddle in Philadelphia in 1838.
Tahchee's name translates to Dutch in Cherokee, and he became known as William Dutch. He was born in 1790 in the Cherokee Nation, which is now in a portion of Alabama. Tahchee became known as a skilled warrior and leader among his people, and he was eventually appointed as a chief of the Cherokee Nation "Old Settlers". During his time as chief, Tahchee was a rival of the Osage people and he worked to protect the Cherokee people and their land from encroachment by white settlers. He was a strong advocate for maintaining Cherokee sovereignty and cultural traditions, even as pressure mounted from the United States government to remove the Cherokee from their ancestral lands. In 1838, Tahchee and many other Cherokee people were forcibly removed from their homes in what is known as the Trail of Tears...
