About the Item

Title: Miraculous Draught of Fishes Engraving – John XXI c.1735 Description: This beautifully detailed antique engraving titled “The draught of Fishes” illustrates the miraculous catch described in John Chapter XXI, where the resurrected Christ appears to his disciples at the Sea of Tiberias. Created around 1735 for a large illustrated family Bible, this copperplate engraving captures the moment when the disciples, following Jesus’ instruction, haul in a net so full of fish that they struggle to bring it into the boat. In the foreground, several disciples work together with intense focus, their muscles straining as they pull up the overflowing net brimming with fish, depicted in fine linear detail. The boat is rendered with accuracy, showing ropes, mast, and plank textures, grounding the scene in realism. To the right, on the shore, the risen Christ appears, with a radiant halo and a calm, commanding gesture, guiding the disciples with divine authority. The background features coastal hills, trees, and buildings, situating the event within its biblical landscape and providing compositional depth. This engraving is executed with precision using the copper engraving technique, renowned for its crisp lines, delicate hatching, and tonal variation, enabling artists to depict both dramatic human action and intricate symbolic detail. While unsigned, it is stylistically aligned with works engraved after designs by Gerard Hoet or Bernard Picart for English folio Bibles of the early 18th century, where such prints served as theological teaching tools and visual devotionals within the Protestant household. Collectors value such engravings for their religious, historical, and artistic significance, offering insights into 18th-century devotional practices, biblical illustration traditions, and early modern interpretations of scriptural miracles. Condition summary: Good condition with light age toning and minor foxing, mainly in the margins. There is a small water stain at the top margin, not affecting the engraved image. The plate impression remains strong, with engraved details well preserved and crisp. Framing tips: Frame this engraving with a dark wood or black moulding featuring a gold inner edge for an elegant and classic presentation. Use a warm cream or ivory mount board to harmonise with the aged paper tones and subtly downplay the top margin stain while highlighting the rich engraved details. UV-protective non-reflective glass is recommended to preserve its fine line work and prevent further paper ageing. This piece will display beautifully in a study, library, or gallery wall of biblical prints, adding narrative depth, historical interest, and spiritual reflection to any collection.
