About the Item

Created by Hans Erni, arguably the last great, figurative artist of the 20th and early 21st centuries, this print of a nude male youth holding the head of a horse is an early and important example of the artist's oeuvre. Before he died recently, Erni was the most important living artist in Switzerland, and was renowned for his drawings, paintings and graphic works for postage stamps and Olympic posters. Starting in the mid-20th century and for decades thereafter, Erni focused on depicting powerfully-built human figures in various combinations, all fluidly and sensuously captured. This print is signed and is number 12 out of an edition of 150.

A fine and bold drawing by William Littlefield, this piece depicts male and female nude figures in an embrace, the male figure inspired by Nicholas Podiapolski, Littlefield's model and lover in the late 1920s. Littlefield is known for his male nudes and mythological scenes, either in ink wash as here, or in oil on canvas. This drawing was completed in St. Tropez, during an extended stay in Europe that gave him a close acquaintance with Italian and other classical art. Two years later, Littlefield formed a friendship with Lincoln Kirstein...
