Antique Antelope Lithograph by Karl Joseph Brodtmann, 1816 This elegant early 19th-century hand-colored lithograph by the celebrated Swiss natural history artist Karl Joseph Brodtmann depicts two graceful antelope species rendered with remarkable delicacy and refinement. Produced in 1816, the composition combines scientific accuracy with the understated elegance characteristic of the finest European zoological illustration of the period. The print features a young “Corinna Antelope” alongside the larger “Bubalis” antelope, both carefully observed and depicted with soft naturalistic coloration. Their slender legs, refined facial features, and beautifully curved horns are rendered with exceptional subtlety, while the sparse landscape setting enhances the sense of openness and calm. The restrained palette of warm browns, soft creams, and muted greens gives the print a highly sophisticated decorative quality. Karl Joseph Brodtmann was one of the pioneers of natural history lithography and is admired today for his ability to combine scientific precision with artistic elegance. His works were produced during the formative years of lithographic printing and are increasingly sought after by collectors of natural history, safari art...

Lioness with Cubs, African Wildlife Natural History Lithograph, 1816
Lioness with Cubs, African Wildlife Natural History Lithograph, 1816

Lioness with Cubs, African Wildlife Natural History Lithograph, 1816

Located in Langweer, NL

Lioness with Cubs, African Wildlife Natural History Lithograph, 1816 This original hand-colored lithograph depicts one of the most captivating scenes in early natural history illustration: a lioness resting with her playful cubs. Combining scientific observation with artistic sensitivity, the image captures both the strength and maternal character of one of the world's most iconic animals. Created by Swiss artist Karl Joseph Brodtmann (1787–1862), the print was published in Lindau in 1816 as part of the renowned Naturhistorische Bilder-Gallerie aus dem Thierreiche. Produced during the pioneering era of lithographic printing, the series introduced European audiences to exotic wildlife from across the globe through beautifully executed hand-colored illustrations. The composition portrays a lioness reclining on the ground while several cubs climb, play, and gather around her. Unlike many zoological illustrations of the period that focused solely on anatomical representation, Brodtmann created a lively and affectionate family scene that conveys both natural behavior and emotional warmth. The result is a print that appeals equally to collectors of natural history and decorative art. Known as the "Queen of Beasts," the lioness plays the central role within the social structure of a pride. She is responsible for most hunting activities and the care and protection of young cubs. Brodtmann's depiction highlights this nurturing aspect of lion behavior while maintaining the scientific accuracy expected from early nineteenth-century natural history publications. The delicate hand coloring, subtle landscape details, and expressive treatment of the animals demonstrate why Brodtmann remains one of the most admired natural history illustrators of his era. His works are increasingly sought after for their decorative appeal, historical importance, and connection to the golden age of scientific illustration. Today, original Brodtmann wildlife lithographs are highly desirable among collectors of zoology, safari art...

Antique Lithographs of Squirrels & Flying Squirrels, 19th Century

Located in Langweer, NL

Antique Squirrel & Flying Squirrel Lithographs – Brodtmann after Schinz c.1830 Description This finely detailed set of two zoological lithographs was produced around 1830 by the Swiss artist and lithographer Karl Joseph Brodtmann, after the work of the naturalist Heinrich Rudolf Schinz. The plates originate from Geïllustreerde Natuurlijke Geschiedenis van Menschen en Dieren (also issued under related natural history titles) and represent an important moment in early 19th-century scientific illustration, when accuracy, taxonomy, and visual elegance were closely aligned. The first plate is devoted to squirrels (family Sciuridae) and presents several species interacting on a branching tree. Shown are the grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis), often known simply as the American grey squirrel; the Eurasian red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris), historically referred to in Dutch as the “gemeene eekhoorn”; and other regional squirrel varieties depicted feeding on nuts or moving dynamically through the branches. The lively composition highlights characteristic bushy tails, alert expressions, and agile postures, making this plate particularly decorative as well as scientifically informative. The second plate focuses on gliding and climbing mammals. It includes flying squirrels, recognisable by their extended patagium (gliding membrane), such as the European flying squirrel (Pteromys volans) and the Virginian flying squirrel (Glaucomys volans), also known as the northern flying squirrel. These are shown mid-glide and at rest, clearly illustrating their unique anatomy. Also depicted are the marmot (Marmota marmota), a robust alpine rodent, and the Madagascan aye-aye (Daubentonia madagascariensis), a rare and striking primate often nicknamed the “finger animal” because of its elongated middle finger. The inclusion of the aye-aye reflects early European fascination with exotic fauna from Madagascar. Together, these plates form a coherent and visually engaging set that appeals to collectors of natural history prints, zoological illustration, and early lithography. They also work exceptionally well in interiors, particularly in libraries, studies, children’s rooms, or nature-inspired spaces, where their combination of charm and scientific heritage adds depth and character. Condition report: Overall good antique condition. Light foxing and mild age-related spotting visible, consistent with lithographs from circa 1830. No major tears or losses observed. Framing tips: Frame as a matching pair using off-white or soft grey mats and simple black or dark walnut frames. Hanging them side by side enhances their taxonomic and visual relationship. Keywords: antique zoological print, squirrel lithograph, flying squirrel print, grey squirrel, red squirrel, flying squirrel, aye-aye, finger animal, marmot, 19th century natural history, Brodtmann lithography, Schinz zoology, scientific illustration, animal prints for interior, antique animal art...

Antique Horse Stable Lithograph - The Young Master’s Favorites, c.1827

Located in Langweer, NL

Title: Antique Horse Stable Lithograph “The Young Master’s Favorites,” c.1827 Description: A charming and beautifully hand-colored antique lithograph titled The Young Master’s Favorites (German: Die Günstlinge des jungen Herrn), created by the celebrated Swiss artist and lithographer Karl Joseph Brodtmann around 1827. This delightful stable scene combines refined equestrian imagery with the warmth and sentimentality characteristic of early 19th-century Romantic animal art. The composition centers around a magnificent chestnut horse standing calmly within an elegant stable interior while a young boy affectionately feeds the animal by hand. Two attentive dogs complete the foreground scene, adding both narrative charm and domestic intimacy, while additional horses and stable figures appear in the softly rendered background. The image beautifully captures the close emotional relationship between humans and animals, a theme highly appreciated during the Romantic period. Karl Joseph Brodtmann (1787–1862) was among the most respected Swiss lithographers and illustrators of the 19th century. He became internationally known for his refined natural history and animal illustrations, many of which appeared in important zoological and educational publications. Brodtmann’s works are admired for their precise draftsmanship, elegant compositions, and exceptionally subtle hand coloring. This print likely originates from one of Brodtmann’s major natural history or animal-themed publications issued in Frankfurt during the 1820s. The multilingual title beneath the image reflects the international market for finely printed lithographs during the period, with captions presented in English, German, French, and Dutch. The soft hand coloring and refined lithographic shading create a highly decorative composition with a warm and timeless atmosphere. The elegant stable architecture, rich chestnut horse, and delicate figures make this work particularly appealing for equestrian collectors, country house interiors, libraries, children’s rooms, or sophisticated sporting collections. Today, original Brodtmann lithographs are highly sought after by collectors of equestrian art, natural history prints, Romantic animal imagery, and early European lithography. This example combines decorative beauty with historical charm and remains highly suitable for both traditional and contemporary interiors. This is an original antique print, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The piece is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale. Keywords: Karl Joseph Brodtmann, antique horse print, stable scene, equestrian lithograph, hand-colored lithograph, horse stable, chestnut horse, antique animal print, Romantic animal art, Swiss lithography, natural history print, sporting art, horse and dogs, 19th century lithograph, Brodtmann horse print, antique stable...
