About the Item
Ornithology Print of Cranes, Flamingos, Herons and Waders by T Bromme c1865
This hand-colored lithograph, published circa 1865 by German geographer and naturalist Traugott Bromme, features a rich diversity of wading birds and wetland species. It was originally included in Bromme’s *Illustrirter Hand-Atlas der Erde und der Menschheit*, an ambitious 19th-century atlas that brought together geography, zoology, and ethnography in finely illustrated volumes.
The central composition is dominated by a large bustard (3), surrounded by a variety of elegant long-legged birds. A crane (4), flamingo (10), and stork (6) stand in stately postures, while a spoonbill (9), glossy ibis (7), and egret or heron (5) feed at the water’s edge. Nearby are numerous shorebirds and waders such as sandpipers, stilts, avocets, plovers (12), lapwings (16), and a curlew (20) with its distinct curved bill.
Also included are a jacana, a cormorant (23), a stone curlew (19), a secretary bird (2), and a variety of small marsh birds feeding or foraging along shallow banks. Each bird is labeled and placed within a landscape of reeds, grasses, and gentle water, bringing natural context to the detailed scientific illustration.
Bromme’s prints were created not just as art, but as educational tools, and remain valued today for their clear draughtsmanship, balanced composition, and historical significance. This plate is a superb example of how 19th-century printing brought natural history to life in the era before widespread photography.
Condition report:
Original hand-colored lithograph by T Bromme, circa 1865. Light even toning with a few small spots at the edge. Excellent detail and vibrant hand-applied color. Paper in good condition.

Comes from Gould's five volume "The Birds of Great Britain", (1862-1873) (First edition), which consists of 367 hand-colored lithographs. Other contributing lithographers were John Gould and English artist Henry Constantine Richter (1821-1902). "The Birds of Great Britain" is recognized as Gould's greatest work. Gold gilded edges as issued.
The common crane, also known as the Eurasian crane, is a bird of the family Gruidae, the cranes. A medium-sized species, it is the only crane commonly found in Europe besides the demoiselle crane and the Siberian crane that only are regular in the far eastern part of the continent.
Biography:
John Gould FRS (14 September 1804 – 3 February 1881) was an English ornithologist and bird artist. He published a number of monographs on birds, illustrated by plates that he produced with the assistance of his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and several other artists including Edward Lear, Henry Constantine Richter, Joseph Wolf and William Matthew Hart. He has been considered the father of bird study in Australia and the Gould League in Australia is named after him. His identification of the birds now nicknamed "Darwin's finches" played a role in the inception of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. Gould's work is referenced in Charles Darwin's book, "On the Origin of Species".
