About the Item

Ornithology Print of Eagles, Falcons, Owls and Vultures by T Bromme c1865 This striking 19th-century hand-colored lithograph, published around 1865 by German geographer and atlas maker Traugott Bromme, showcases a variety of birds of prey from across the globe. Originally part of his renowned *Illustrirter Hand-Atlas der Erde und der Menschheit*, the plate presents detailed illustrations of raptors in both perched and alert poses, surrounded by a natural cliffside setting. Dominating the upper section are powerful birds such as vultures and eagles, including the bearded vulture or lammergeier (2), bald eagle (9), golden eagle (10), and black vulture (3). Falcons and hawks are also represented, including a peregrine falcon (5), kestrel (6), and other medium-sized birds of prey (1, 4, 8). On the ground stands a secretary bird (11), known for its long legs and snake-hunting behavior. To the lower left, two owls—a small spotted owl (13) and a great horned owl (14)—bring nocturnal variation to the composition. The birds are labeled with numbers and arranged with care, showing size, plumage, and relative position in the bird hierarchy, suggesting both scientific order and artistic balance. This print reflects the 19th-century fascination with taxonomy and global biodiversity, created for educational and decorative purposes. Bromme's plates were designed to make knowledge visually accessible to a growing middle-class audience and remain highly collectible today for their elegance, detail, and historical value. Condition report: Original hand-colored lithograph by T Bromme, circa 1865. Good preservation with mild age toning and only faint foxing near the edge. Vibrant colors and no structural damage. Tips for framing: Frame with a cream or soft tan mat to complement the warm earth tones. A dark walnut or deep bronze frame will enhance the strength and richness of the birds, making this an ideal addition to studies, libraries, or nature-themed interiors.
