Ornithology Print of Hornbill, Crows, Finches and Songbirds by T Bromme c1865

About the Item

Ornithology Print of Hornbill, Crows, Finches and Songbirds by T Bromme c1865 This beautifully detailed 19th-century hand-colored lithograph was created by German geographer and publisher Traugott Bromme, circa 1865. Published in his educational atlas *Illustrirter Hand-Atlas der Erde und der Menschheit*, this ornithological plate depicts a rich variety of perching birds, corvids, tropical species, and finches from around the world, all arranged in a dynamic natural landscape. The most prominent bird is a large hornbill (10), perched centrally on a branch with its long curved bill and prominent casque. Below, a large black crow or raven (1) dominates the foreground, while a jackdaw or hooded crow (13) stands nearby. Other identifiable species include the Eurasian jay (14), goldfinch (6), greenfinch (4), chaffinch (8), and bullfinch (9). Also present are several tropical birds such as a bird of paradise with elegant tail feathers (18), a waxwing (15), an oriole (17), and a variety of colorful warblers, buntings, and swallows. Birds are carefully numbered and arranged with expressive poses across branches, rocks, and grassy foreground. Each one is captured in a moment of observation or flight, giving the plate a lively, almost theatrical composition. Bromme’s intent was both educational and artistic—his atlas illustrations offered accessible scientific learning paired with fine engraving and hand coloring. This lithograph is ideal for collectors of antique ornithological prints or for anyone interested in 19th-century natural history illustration. It presents a broad survey of avian life across temperate and tropical regions with scientific charm and decorative flair. Condition report: Original hand-colored lithograph by T Bromme, circa 1865. Very good condition with light age toning and minimal marginal foxing. Strong impression and vibrant coloring throughout. Tips for framing: Pair with a warm ivory or muted gold mat to enhance the colorful plumage. A dark brown or black wood frame offers striking contrast, perfect for studies, libraries, or any interior inspired by nature and classical education.
