About the Item

Ornithology Print of Ostrich, Peacock, Turkey and Game Birds by T Bromme c1865 This vivid 19th-century hand-colored lithograph, published circa 1865 by German geographer and natural history author Traugott Bromme, features a diverse collection of large and ground-dwelling birds. Drawn from Bromme’s educational *Illustrirter Hand-Atlas der Erde und der Menschheit*, the print showcases birds of economic, cultural, and exotic interest, presented in naturalistic poses with detailed feather patterns. At the center is a dynamic depiction of an ostrich (12) in motion, flanked by a cassowary (14) and a rhea (13), both flightless birds of the Southern Hemisphere. A male turkey (11) displays its tail feathers prominently in the foreground. Above are a brilliantly plumed Indian peacock (9), an elegant pheasant (8), a wild junglefowl or rooster (7), and a lyrebird (10) with its fan-like tail. Other game birds include a guinea fowl (6), partridge (5), dove (2), pigeon (1), and various quail (3, 4). The birds are arranged across gentle hills and grassy landscapes, each numbered and shown in lifelike posture. The illustration captures not only anatomical accuracy but also a sense of regional and behavioral diversity. These birds represent continents ranging from Africa to Asia and the Americas, many of them domesticated or semi-domesticated species central to human societies. Bromme’s lithographs were produced as part of a broader educational movement during the 19th century, offering beautifully rendered zoological knowledge to the general public. Today, they remain highly collectible for their artistic quality, historic value, and visual storytelling. Condition report: Original hand-colored lithograph by T Bromme, circa 1865. Light age toning with faint foxing at the margins. Colors are vibrant and paper is in very good condition with no damage. Tips for framing: Use a soft cream or natural linen mat to complement the earthy palette of the birds. A walnut or antique gold frame adds warmth and elegance, ideal for a study, dining room, or nature-themed interior.
